Zoosection: Mestommatina
|
|
The Mestommatina differ from the Elastommatina in that the species in this zoosection commonly have four eyes and the arolium of the 'foot' is normally longer than the claws.
Harvey (1992) erected this zoosection originally consisting of 7 families contained within 2 superfamilies. Rearrangements since then have seen one family removed and placed elsewhere, and one superfamily reduced to family status. The remaining superfamily is the Garypoidea which, within its six families, contains 525 species in 65 genera. |
Two families from the Garypoidea are represented in the Northern Rivers region although from each of the two only one species has sofar been identified as likely residents. A paltry record but one which is likely to improve over time.
In general, species from this zoosection may be found on every continent except Antarctica but, species do tend to be localised and colder climates are usually avoided. They can be found in their usual hiding places such as leaflitter, under bark or rocks, etc. |
