Infraorder: Eupodina
Eupodinan mites are divided into four superfamilies, accounting for fifteen families containing about 2.000 species. Species from all four superfamilies may be encountered worldwide but sightings of mites belonging to the two smallest superfamilies (Halacaroidea and Tydeoidea) are quite rare everywhere. Nearly all species in the Infraorder are minute to small and there are more than a few that require a microscope to see.
The Family: Halacaridae which largely consists of meiobenthic (>0.1 to <1.0 mm in size) marine animals makes up more than half of the infraorder and there are very likely quite a few species that are local. Finding and identifying them is not all that easy though.
Of the land-based eupodinans, the Bdelloid and Eupodoid Mites are the most common. They tend to be larger and more colourful and so are easier to spot. |
