Garypinid Pseudoscorpions - Family: Garypinidae
The World Catalogue of Pseudoscorpions lists 96 species of Garypinids in 22 genera as of March 2024. The group was erected as the Subfamily: Garypininae (within the Family: Cheliferidae) to accommodate the Genus: Garypinus, in 1889 by the Hungarian Professor of Zoology, Eugen von Daday (1855-1920). In 1930 Chamberlin placed the subfamily within the Family: Olpiidae where it remained until 2005 when M.L.I. Judson raised it to family status.

The Garypinidae have a cosmopolitan distribution and in Australia they are found in both the eastern and western regions of the country. In Central Australia they are poorly represented.
Most, not all, of the species are recognisable by the fact that their 'feet' have divided arolia (= adhesive pads). Furthermore the Garypinidae commonly have divided tergites and sternites. (= exoskeleton plates covering the upper and lower segments resp. of the abdomen) |
The Genus: Protogarypinus is endemic to Australia. It contains two species one of which is a resident of the Northern Rivers region. Whereas there are no local records that have been identified to species level, the local Garypinid is likely to be P. dissimilis. The other species, P. giganteus is most likely restricted to the western parts of the Australia.
