Cycloctenid Spiders - Family: Cycloctenidae

The Cycloctenidae are a family of spiders that consists of eight genera with a total of eighty species known to date. Seven of the genera are exclusive to New Zealand. The eighth genus contains seven species endemic to Australia, one, possible two of which, may be encountered in the Northern Rivers. One of these two species, C. abyssinus, was first described by Arthur T. Urquhart (a New Zealand naturalist with an interest in spiders) in 1889 from a specimen sent to him. This specimen was collected from the Jenolan Caves in southern N.S.W. and its' status as a Northern Rivers species is therefore unlikely leaving just a single species of this family as a possible resident of the Northern Rivers. This species then, would be C. robustus.
